Job Details

Wendi Sierra, Oneida tribal member and professor in the English and interactive media programs at St. John Fisher College has received a National Endowment for the Humanities awards to work in the Oneida community and create an Oneida Language and Culture mobile game. The game, targeted at elementary school students, will introduce players to Oneida vocabulary via interactive narratives based on Oneida stories and folklore. We are recruiting now for artists, musicians, and speakers to work on this project. Each of these opportunities comes with a financial stipend.

The game is based on the concepts of Thanksgiving Address, that of being grateful for our world. It will feature versions in English and Oneida for players to listen to. In this first version of the game we will dramatize the story of Sky Woman, drawing key words from the story for vocabulary building. Players will have the option to play through the story in English, Oneida, or mixed English-Oneida.

This presents an exciting opportunity for tribe members to get involved in weaving Oneida language and culture into interactive media. We are particularly excited to hear from young artists and musicians with a passion for gaming. Up and coming Oneida musicians and artists will be given the opportunity to work one-on-one with Dawn Dark Mountain and Brent Michael Davids in the early part of summer 2020.
